Twitter is one of the most popular social marketing tools out there and as such, it’s a perfect tool for writers for many reasons.

Here are some reasons you may want to start Tweeting:

  1. If you’re a published author, this is a great way to converse with your fans. Talk about your work, announce book tours, etc. Today’s writer needs to be their own publicist and Twitter offers a great way to do that.
  2. Drive traffic to your website. If you have a blog, an online bookstore, or want to build brand recognition, Twitter is an excellent way to do that. It gets traffic from people and from search engines. Every time you write something new online, add the URL to a tweet.
  3. Network. Network with fans, other writers, and publishers. You’ll find plenty of people on Twitter that you’d benefit from connecting with.

Another great reason to join Twitter is that because of the 140 character limit, it’s a great exercise in brevity. We all know that it’s preferable to avoid needless words and Twitter does a great job at helping you say what you need to say with as few words as possible. There are even writing contests held during Twitter parties with 140-character contests.
