Learn to Promote Your Books – Yourself

Authors need to learn how to promote their books. It may sound simple, but there is a lot to learn. Some authors believe they can write an incredible book and the publisher handle all the promotion. Sad to say, those days are gone for most authors. We know some authors are given a promotional budget by their publishers, but they are the exception and not the norm. The publishing business has become much more competitive and authors who want to sell books need to learn to market themselves and their books. Some publishing companies request a marketing plan when you submit a query letter and synopsis. When I submit query letters or non fiction book proposals, I mention that I have sixteen years of marketing experience.

Learn the Marketing Mindset

There are authors do not want to learn how to promote their books. The decision is yours, but authors who learn self-promotion will sell more books. Think about it. What is your goal in writing? Do you want to hold your books, flip through the pages and smell the new book scent? Or, do you yearn to hear that readers loved your story and want to read more? Even if you aren’t writing to make money, it is necessary to make sales in order to share your work with others. We’ll discuss techniques needed to build and utilize a marketing plan.

Use the Internet to Promote Your Books

The internet offers a variety of ways to promote books. A large number of these possibilities are free or low cost options. The internet is a wonderful way to get the word out about your books. It offers opportunities to network with other authors and with readers. You can find a wealth of message boards, forums, networking sites, blogs and other ways to stay in touch and circulate information about your books. I believe all authors need a website to promote their work and especially e-published authors who have e-books available. Why would you miss a golden opportunity to communicate with computer savvy readers?

How To Promote Your Books in the Real World

Your books need to be promoted in book stores and other retail outlets. Book signings, speaking to readers, craft shows and writer’s conferences are just a few places where you can promote books and create a name for yourself. Are book stores the best place to sell your books? I read articles that state book stores are not the best place to sell your books. We’ll discuss other avenues you can utilize to build name recognition for yourself and your books. Creation and distribution of press releases can generate interest in your books.

These are just a few of the topics you can learn about on this site. The goal is to help you learn how to share your work with interested readers. Of course, it won’t hurt that effectively promoting your books will help you make money.
